Board Members.

The Board is made up of individuals with a passion for live music and community. It works year-round to lead strategy, establish practices and policies, and oversee operations and finances.

Prospective Board members should have the ability to contribute time, energy and experience to the SweetWater, a passion for music, and excellent communication and collaborative skills.

For those considering serving as a Board Member, some key information to consider:

  • Board members serve three-year terms to a maximum of two terms, participate in regular meetings (6-8 a year), largely held via Zoom, to participate (subject to health restrictions) in person at two half-day planning meetings and an Annual General Meeting.

  • Board members sit on at least one SweetWater committee: Resource Development (Fundraising and Legacy Endowment), Education and Outreach (school programs, youth music development, community-based music programming), Board Development (recruitment, nominations, orientation) or Audience Development (linking to audiences, raising awareness about SweetWater, community partnerships).

  • Board members are expected to work with staff to support the festival, participate in fundraising, oversee the financial health of the organization, and attend and support SweetWater events.

Board membership is an entirely voluntary position, carrying no compensation beyond an enhanced sense of community and the satisfaction of helping to celebrate and promote beautiful music. Unlike other SweetWater volunteer positions, Board applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

What sorts of volunteer opportunities does SweetWater offer?

Despite the challenges of COVID, the SweetWater Music Festival, under the inspired guidance of artistic director Edwin Huizinga, is looking forward to another year of growth. The Festival, now in its 19th year, is a unique annual event in Grey-Bruce, Ontario that showcases exceptional musicians from across Canada and beyond, performing live classical, jazz and contemporary music.

Staging a Festival as ambitious as SweetWater takes significant volunteer support and as we expand, we invite new people from the immediate local community and beyond who feel they can lend a hand to help contribute to the Festival’s success.

The Festival is on the lookout for three categories of volunteers:

  • The Board of Directors is made up of individuals with a passion for live music and community. The Board works year-round to lead strategy, establish practices and policies, and oversee operations and finances.

  • Each of SweetWater’s committees (Resource Development, Education & Outreach, Board Development, and Audience Development) is always on the lookout for volunteers with specific skills or interests in those areas. Some committees such as Education & Outreach appreciate specific musical experience. Many others also benefit from hands-on knowledge of a particular, not necessarily music-related, skill of use to the Festival.

  • Running a festival of this size demands significant operational help. There are big tent events, local pop-up concerts, fundraising drives, social events and each relies heavily on volunteer support. Volunteers play a key role in the set up, execution and supervision of events, especially during COVID when it’s necessary to make sure that all our events comply with the various guidelines. From helping with catering to crowd control and seating, the Festival is dependent on volunteer aid. By volunteering, you’re playing a key role in making the Festival happen, but you also get to experience some exceptional music!
