About SweetWater

Music that Inspires, Challenges,
and Connects.

The SweetWater Music Festival showcases the best musicians from across Canada and beyond performing classical, jazz, and contemporary music.

This unique annual event in Grey Bruce, Ontario has treated audiences to three days of outstanding performances in a beautiful, rural setting on Georgian Bay.

Throughout the year, SweetWater’s special concert events spotlight some of Canada’s top musicians as well as emerging, aspiring artists.

Audiences are treated to one-of-a-kind, intimate and cutting-edge musical experiences that engage the mind and spirit.

SweetWater also captivates and enriches our local community by spreading the joy of music. From musicians visiting local schools to an annual community play along, SweetWater is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of musicians and audiences.

Small Town – Big Idea.

Small Town – Big Idea is a conversation between the two gifted musicians who have led SweetWater, its founding artistic director, Mark Fewer, and his successor and once violin student, Edwin Huizinga, now the current artistic director. For 19 years Mark was the heart and mind of SweetWater. What was his vision? And how does his successor, Edwin, keep that fire going? Listen in on the conversation of two brilliant violinists, both of whom are passionate about building up community fellowship through world class live musical performance. Produced and directed by Gail Gallant & Michael Allder and shot and edited by Bill Loucks. All three are retired veterans of CBC Television. Additional Camera and Sound by Triple Point Media. Special thanks to our financial supporters for this project: Grey Bruce Community Foundation and Cynthia & Mark Lemon.

Strategic Priorities

SweetWater Music Festival was founded by Mark Fewer, Keith Medley and Jean Medley (deceased). Early rehearsals, meals for the musicians, and receptions occurred in a tent behind the Medley Family farmhouse. Below is a photo of the three founders sharing a moment of levity at one of the early receptions in the Medley home.

Annual Reports

SweetWater Marks Another Successful Year.

Treasurer Gwynne Potter reported to the AGM that the Festival earned a healthy surplus in 2025-26, in large part due to a marked increase in ticket sales for the Spring concerts and
festival performances as well as a number of successful fundraising efforts. The Festival continues to expand its audience base, both within the region and in terms of increasing
accessibility through flexible ticket prices. Artistic Director Edwin Huizinga’s dynamic and innovative programming also attracts new concert goers.

General Manager Natasha Bood provided an overview of the festival’s highlights, “which included artists such as Moira Smiley, and grammy winner Hilario Duran performing at the Harmony Centre. We featured our composer-in-residence India Gailey. And of course, there was incredible chamber music featuring our 2025 festival artists including Sheila Jaffe, Keith Hamm, Julie Hereish, Matthias McIntire, and more. The Festival concluded with Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante at the Meaford United Church to a sold-out audience.” Edwin Huizinga shared that he was exceptionally pleased with the success of the Spring concerts and this year’s festival and is excited about his plans for the 2026 festival program.

Chairperson Vivian McCaffrey recognized the success of the community string ensemble, SweetStrings, in its inaugural year and thanked the volunteers who contributed to its success. She also acknowledged the hard work and commitment of her fellow directors, who bring an array of talents and expertise to the Board. The Board officially welcomed Jacqui Morgan as its newest member.

Vivian concluded her report by saying “SweetWater’s ongoing success and ability to “punch above its weight” is largely due to the artistic vision and passion of Artistic Director Edwin Huizinga who never ceases to amaze us all with his inspirational programming and cadre of professional musicians; the incomparable expertise and competence of General Manager Natasha Bood; the multi-talents of Social Media Coordinator Karen Choi; and the dedication and enthusiasm of Next Wave Coordinator Bridget Walsh.”

Reports were received by the Board Development Committee, the Education Outreach Committee and Resource Development Committee. A new Executive Committee was elected; Cynthia Lemon will provide leadership in her new role as President (and Chair).

A Legacy of Service to SweetWater.
