Born in Saarbrucken Germany and raised in Owen Sound Ontario, Sebastian Ostertag began learning the cello at age six and has become known for his passion and dedication for all musical styles of music from Haydn to Hip-Hop.


An engaging soloist, Sebastian has performed with the Georgian Bay Symphony, the Kincardine Summer Music Festival Orchestra, as well as on CBC Radio and Classical 96.3 FM. Other performances have included the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute, the Banff Centre Chamber Music Residency Program and the Sweetwater Music Festival. In 2009, he was the recipient of the Donna Steinacher/Friends of Leith Church Award, and performed a sold out recital of Bach, Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff with pianist Peter Longworth. Chosen as "Best Emerging Artist" at the 2009 Owen Sound Cultural Awards, Sebastian was also a founding member of the string quartet Murnival with which he performed at the Montreal Haydn 2009 Festival, and was a prizewinner at the 2010 Glenn Gould School Chamber Music Competition.


As a side project to his formal education, Sebastian has performed with some of Canada's leading popular musicians. He recorded on Basia Bulat's Polaris Prize nominated records "Oh My Darling," and "Gold Rush" and played at the Ottawa Blues Festival, and was heard on TV commercials by Volkswagon and Subaru. Sebastian has also worked extensively with "Canada's Best Rapper" Shadrach Kabango, including performing on the Juno award winning album "TSOL". In 2011/2012, Sebastian can be heard at the Summerfolk Music and Craft festival playing Klezmer music, and as a featured soloist performing the Haydn D major Cello Concerto with the Prince George Symphony Orchestra.
